Cold Mails via Facebook, Twitter, etc ?

Has anyone of you experience with cold mailing other businesses via facebook message or via a twitter message ? Shall i try that or is better to stick to plain old email and cold call ?

Im trying to sell webdesign. And with cold calls it works... like 1 out of 100 thats not bad but i wonder if cold mails via social media can boost that.

I tried this method several years ago and it worked well, however, I spent a lot of time. I sent about 700 messages during 1 month and got my 5 first clients on social media service. Every message was individual, I made a quick review of their social media accounts and gave them some recommendations about how they could increase their traffic and sales from SMM. Some of these 5 clients worked with me for 2-3 years and paid me monthly, also they recommend me to some other people and brought me more clients.. so it's definitely worth it.
