Dear all,

I would like to have your view about a professional problem that I have been facing for a while now. The issue is the employment gap I have on my resume. When I use the term gap, I talk about a period when I tried to work independently setting my own business in the UK for around three years. Since I had many problems during that period (girlfriend moved to another nation, I relocated as well for staying closer, my dad’s cancer etc.) I left the organisation dormant without any traceable activity to demonstrate that it was a regular business registered with myself as a sole trader and it never started. Although I currently work as an employee in a tech business, I still get some troubles when I submit the resume to recruiters.

What happens is that, if I leave a gap on the resume, recruiters ask me to provide information, but when I do it, they turn me down. I feel quite disheartened since for the last two years at this job I have been working very hard and kept on studying for certifications in the IT field thinking of moving forward in a higher position. It cost me money and effort.

At this point, I wonder if I would be unethical to pay a business owner to provide me job reference for a position with similar responsibilities to the one I got now and try to overcome this problem or you think is better to find a company more understandable towards somebody who at least made an attempt in life?

The concern is that most of the organisations in the field usually perform a background check for the last two jobs at least. The candidate would need to provide the name of the company, a reference’s contact and consider the possibility that whoever runs the vetting process could query the companies’ house database to find out whether it exists or is a complete lie. That means that it’s not just about asking your friend to pick up a phone call or setting up a website with an aged domain, the company should have at least been incorporated and then dissolved.

Right now I feel quite pissed for the ethical side and eventually the necessity to find somehow a business owner who can BS for providing me with a reference.

I would like to know your view concerning this point. I follow the site from time to time and I know that is plenty of brilliant entrepreneurs and sometimes there are tons of flames when it comes to ethics.

Kind regards.

i wouldn't fake it just say you were on a sabbatical , trying set up business etc etc, ive had lots of breaks in my life travelling etc, just don't put anything you're not prepared to lie about

employers dont need to know everything
i weouldnt give an employer everything

Look at botis johnsons cv, look at Donald trumps cv

Lots people fake it though

if they want you, they'll have you

Resumes are always a bunch of lies and bs. I once saw a resume of a new candidate who explicit mentioned he had knowledge using a certain software, an even newer version of the software than what it was released at that time LOL. We still hired him cause he had good background and experience in the field.

You could have done a million things in that period of time, doubt they would really care and go that deep. Just don't go savage with your lies;)

I'd say if a company can't understand that to find somewhere else to work that they actually understand you tried.
