I recently started to build backlinks to one of my sites, and I'm always excited to see the number of indexed back links on Search Console increasing.

Today I checked and saw some newly indexed backlinks. I clicked on one of them to view the page on the referring site where my backlink sits.

The surprising thing is that on the page, there was no back link, at least not the type most of us are used to. There was only a mention of my brand and a few keywords. The page is here on BHW.

If brand mentions like this can be regarded as backlinks in the eyes of Google, then perhaps there are new opportunities to create back links without resorting to spamming.

Over to the SEO gurus here. I must be missing something I guess?

You mean that it was your URL in text format, and not as a hyperlink?

It isn't really my URL in text format. It is in fact, less than that:). No no protocol or tld, and there's a space between the two main words that make up the domain name. It wasn't a hyperlink

So it was basically a brand mention. There has been talk over the years, on how Google values brand mentions or text URLs on a website. There has been a consensus that such "backlinks" aren't actual backlinks, and don't carry the same value as typical backlinks, but they do bring something else to the table. If you do some slight research on the topic, you'll find that most sources mention such mentions as being good in establishing authority within your domain. Can we quantify the added authority? Not really. But nevertheless, they still carry weight.

What's interesting on your end is that this brand mention actually appeared within your GWT. That, I haven't heard about.

It's surprising to me; almost weird

Pics or it didn't happen.
Lol...bro, this is not one of those threads bragging about some achievement, so I don't bear any burden of proof. And if Googlebot can be smart enough to detech such vague brand mentions, I'd rather not be stupid enough to leave any footprints.

I won't wait for expert advice on this before making meaning out of it, and I urge you too to not wait for any evidence it happened before seizing any opportunities it might present (assuming this is a new trend).:)

Did u see "a space between the two main words" inside google console or on the page itself? I don't think this is possible anyway. You might got confused a bit.

I think you are making backlink from some spamming links or bad links which is not good for your site. I will suggest to write some guest posting to your related niche site and submit. You will get really good links as well as traffics.

The space is on the page itself. In search console, the targeted page of the link is my homepage.

As an example, the brand mention appears as Face book on the page, and the targeted page on search console is https://facebook.com

If you all believe this is impossible, then it's possible Rankbrain has upgraded it's IQ, or something strange is going on.
