WordPress is the area where I feel like a fish in the sea... ;)

Feel free to ask me anything about WordPress. That can be, but it's limited to every question you got (plugins, themes wise), but also technical issues, and everything else.

Please do not request themes or plugins in this thread. This thread is meant to give you advice.

great to see a nice AMA thread from @Festinger my question(s) are :
1. what's the best way to keep a Wordpress site secure
2. do you think using a nulled themes/plugins would seize as a lot of us knows the implication yet we ignore it?
3. what makes you think WordPress is the best platform than others?
 
Browse BuzzFeed on your smartphone. On the bottom of the article, you will see FB and Pin share buttons (plus other as a third button).
How to get the same on a Wordpress/Woocommerce?

1. In terms of page load speed, is Nginx a better choice vs Apache? In my specific case I'm using AWS Lightsail, around 30 visitors a day

2. Would MariaDB yield better page load speeds vs MySQL?

3. Would you use Brotli compression?

4. Would you also implement WEBP image format to reduce their size?

Thanks for posting your questions.
  1. I will spare you the story of frequently updating your plugins, generate safe passwords and other noob advices... For a lot of projects I am using CleanTalk anti spam and firewall as security plugin, which handles every attack + spam registration for me. Also, I am using CloudFlare to prevent DDOS attacks in combination with WP Rocket, which is a very good combination.
  2. Nulled themes / plugins, I am not fan of them anyway. A lot of louche website are uploading a modified version of the original theme and plugin and a few days, weeks or months later, your website has been hacked. You cannot verify the intention of such people and therefore I have never used a nulled or pirated version on a live website. On some occasions I will test these out on my localhost to see if the plugin or theme is what I am looking for, but I will never use a nulled or pirated version online.
  3. Actually, I don't think it's the 'best' platform. The reason why I am using the platform, is that it's by far the most popular platform and the developed plugins are endless. I am not a coder, so I am trying to achieve my goal by using the right plugins. But the main core of WordPress can be improved a lot IMO, stripping all the unused things, just like the outdated comment section settings...
 
I'm currently planning on migrating to WordPress. Do you think Bluehost is the best hosting company as recommended by the WordPress team. If no, which hosting company do you recommend ?

  1. I have better experience with an optimized Nginx server; for some websites I am using Kinsta managed webhosting and my websites are loading very fast (also the combination of Nginx and Google Cloud).
  2. Yup, MariaDB for sure. This article gives an nice overview.
  3. Currently I am investigating Brotli compression more in-depth, so I am unable to give you an advice in this matter at this moment, sorry.
  4. Yes WEBP image compression works like a charm, I have used this plugin in the past, but the downside is that the majority of the themes are not compatible.

Oh no, stay away from BlueHost. I have literally tried EVERY host that's around the web. BlueHost is on the same level as HostGator. They are putting too many customers on each server, loading speed for the first byte is very bad and customer support are a bunch of retards. What's your budget?

If it's mid $$, than you can go with Kinsta or WP Engine. I prefer to have Kinsta, because I'd like their admin interface.
If you're short on money, you can go with SiteGround. Very reliable, fast speeds but not entirely optimized for WordPress.

P.s. I am not affiliated with any of these hosting companies.

I am using the following plugins to optimize the speed:
  • WP Rocket
  • CDN
  • WP Optimize (not allowed on all hosting platforms)
To stop crawlers, you can use this plugin?

This is a very general question. I am always using YOAST, WP Rocket, XML Sitemaps & Loco Translate.

Oh, I really dislike the Gutenberg editor. On all my WordPress (157 installations as we speak) websites I am using the classic editor.
