Has anybody tried building backlinks directly to the URL shortener provided by Google maps for a GMB listing?

If so did it have any effect on the GMB position?

People are always using the short URL to link to directions from their website.
If you look at https://goo.gl/maps/ in Ahrefs there are over 500m links across over 880k domains.

Not to hijack this thread, however, how can you tell if a competitor is backlinking to their GMB?

Go to maps

enter the business name

when the business GMB listing appears on the left hand side, click the three lines next to the business name to open the menu.

Click share or embed map

The link to share will be there

Not for myself

But have done for others, and it has ranked in GMB listings.

What kind of links and how much did you do? Is a simple fiverr GSA gig enough for this? As i guess most people do nothing like i havent done anything for it. I have just spammed my tripadvisor and facebook pages in the hope it would help... but cant say much result for that ones

Thanks. Like this i guess: https://goo.gl/maps/QkirUYg2BUo (McDonalds Amsterdam)

Yeah

I still have absolutely no idea if it has any effect on GMB rankings though.
A lot of people say it's makes no difference whatsoever.

I'm going to try building 10 pbn links with unique content and one of those links on it and see if it makes any difference.

I did the web2.0 links with the google direction maps embed in them. And pointed some citations too.

Thanks Mate!

SO for my McDonalds Amsterdam example it would be this: <iframe src="https://www.google.com/maps/embed?p...am+Damrak+8!5e0!3m2!1snl!2snl!4v1548953270073" width="600" height="450" frameborder="0" style="border:0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And that you would embed into web 2.0s and additionally add local citations to the google maps link (https://goo.gl/maps/uoNDpQZrigK2).

Is this the way you did this?
