I'm not an SEO guy but I will try to explain you from my perspective.
It's building links to your links, so you have MAIN SITE and You've got LINK 1 & LINK 2 that points to your main site, link juice is building more LINKS but not for the MAIN SITE, but for your LINK 1 & LINK 2 sites... It's called Tier linkbuilding

It essentially explains the power of getting a link from a specific page has, it has to do with the backlinks/inner structure of the site. For example a page linked to directly from several sites will provide more link juice than an orphan page.
