Get customers by cold email?

Hi guys! I am a wordpress web developer about 5 or 6 months ago.
In this time I have only got 3 clients, maybe my method is not so effective.

I live in a small city in Argentina, then I sent mail to big cities of Latin America. My potential clients are: dentists and chiropractors. Because 2 of the 3 jobs I did were for dentists.

The email I sent is something like this:

"Hi Diego Ferrari, my name is Nicolás Melian, I'm a web designer and developer.

I found the website of your clinic looking for a dentist in Buenos Aires. Also I saw that you have more than 600 followers on Facebook. You are doing a great job.

Although I do believe that the design of the website could be improved, that it is somewhat outdated and does not look good on mobile phones. People spend hours with their cell phone, use it for everything and when they want a dentist they usually look for it in Google, so having a website that is fast, with a modern design and looks perfect is essential. That this according to their services and trajectory.

Sometimes I receive answers and half are people who ask price and do not appear (normal I suppose), and others say "Ok, we can get together", and I tell them "I do not live in Buenos Aires, I have my offices in Puerto Madryn, but there is no I have clients in different countries of Latin America, "and I do not receive any more answers.

I'm probably doing something wrong.

If you receive answers, then you're doing something right, pal! Now it's just about closing...don't mention the office location and set them up for a call first. The location of your office should not matter tbh. Give them a 15 min free consultation and see how it goes. And always follow up!

Yes, I guess I get some answers, I always say the location because most of the time they say "Are you from X city?", or "Let's set an appointment time".

I see. Have you contacted everyone in your town and the other towns around you? Might improve the situation. Nevertheless your location should not be that big of an issue, so try to follow up with these folks. You have to be persistent.

Hey, i would suggest you to call the local business owner rather than mailing them. Cold calling if done right is definately has the best success rate.

Cold emailing is tough, so don't expect huge results unless you're ready to do some semi-custom writing for each one, and a lot of it. I see some issues here with your email script.

• You're selling way too soon with the "I'm a web designer and developer". Leave that at the end, because people will just stop reading right there.
• "Although I do believe that the design of the website could be improved...". That entire paragraph needs to be redone, it's essentially emailing someone and bashing their website, and some of them might have been done by the owner himself, so it can be insulting them right there. Mention instead that you looked through their site and believe that it could use some work in order to get even better results from their visitors to get more conversions (form fills/calls/etc) and grow their business. You're selling results. Then say something like, here's a few things that could be done to get some improvements. List out 2-3 small fixes.
  
• Close with how you've worked with companies like theirs, what results they had, and then tell them how you'd like to help and link the portfolio.

About them not responding after talking about price or your office location, let that go, either they are cheap or don't want to hire from outside of their location. Move on. You can also scrape a lot of emails and send out mass cold email campaigns with a script with the fixes I mentioned, and give 2-3 points of general improvements that they can do or a list of things that can affect conversions (Not clickable phone number, slow load times, etc)

Another idea. You could even go the extra mile and make a screen recording while analyzing their website. Had huge success with that in the past.

I never closed somebody with mail, but do 1 sale per day by phone. It conveys much more personality and value.

Use you mail success to hook your prospect, then close the deal by phone.

First rule of sales, never say no to the customer. If he says "We can get together" you say "Sure, let's get together over skyp ... etc" and then schedule a call. Give them solutions not more problems to solve.

Cold emailing is a super effective way to find new clients. Way better than cold calling since you can link people straight to your website or social accounts or whatever else to establish credibility.

The key is just to sell something differentiated. A lot of guys get low conversion rates because firstly their emails look sketchy as can be and secondly they're selling the usual websites, rep management, etc., in an untargeted way.

Find the people who actually can benefit from your product AND who at least should currently be in the buying process due to some immediate and pressing need, then email them.

For instance, "website design" is a tough sell. However, if you do it in a highly targeted way, like for instance say messaging new entrepreneurs who just started blogging on Medium, well a lot of them would probably rather blog on their own website but they don't want to lose days getting that set up.

So when you email them within 1 week of launching their new blog like "I was reading your new blog post, "x," on Medium and realized that your content would attract more traffic from search engines on your own site. Having your website puts you in control etc., ensuring ownership etc., and allowing you to convert readers into leads by capturing their emails etc. To help you get started, I could put a website that you could get started with together for $100."

Then have him sign up for a hosting provider using your affiliate link ($100+) and have him give you $100 to install wordpress. Then upload some of the best premium WP themes to make him happy. From there you can upsell him on custom design and development by the hour, set up his autoresponder, and maybe even ghostwrite his content.

Or what if you reach out to new startups that just raised at least $50k in funding and don't have a website?
What if you messaged a business within 24 hours after its website goes down?

I could write 100 other ideas in under an hour... you can too.

With this type of email you're actually helping people, so you don't have to worry as much about getting flagged as spam as frequently. You could safely send 50+ of these emails per day... I'm sure some would send hundreds.

See it works when it's targeted. But if all you do is blast 100 people per day with a crappy message about how you're a website designer bla bla bla, you won't get a single interested prospect and you'll end up blacklisted.

So before you do any emailing, start by getting your hands on some good data because really it's a data targeted game. Just brainstorm dozens of different tactics and offers like the one I made up off the top of my head and think about how you can find these targeted buyers without getting involved in making a huge scraper. With a good offer you should be able to get at least 2 prospects from 20 emails. I've gotten as high as a 30 percent close rate from cold emailing from a very targeted and value added offer. You can manually scrape the data for 20 emails no problem. Then when you find something that truly works, then you can scale by having an automated scraper made and getting all the software tools etc.

Personally I'd recommend brainstorming 20 different offers like that, then hire a VA for a couple of days to scrape all the data for messaging 20 people for each offer. Then you can write up the emails, send them out, and test to see what works. When something works, you scale. It's really that simple. Not hard to find something that works, just focus on services that actually add value.

I always liked sending them videos showing growth of other similar companies in the area. Then continue sending videos on a weekly basis until eventually they've seen your face enough that they have to atleast schedule a consultation.

As a problem that I had these months, it is the value that I give to my clients. Yes, I create web pages, but it's a little "abstract" value. You know I mean Social media marketing is tangible, like SEO, but web design is a bit more complicated. I tried learning social media marketing but I really did not like it as a service.

In these months just send the same email to dentists and chiropractors, I will think more ideas!

That way I call a qualified prospects list and usually sell an audit, some blog post or a content writing training. That way I always end up once a month with a "can you rank me 1st : take my money" client.

The first months are harsh because, you need to create relations and get rejected a lot. But once you have 50 qualified propects that like you in you CRM, it become sweeter.

No problem. Hope you make the changes and try it out! Yes, you are not selling a website, you're selling them what the website can do for them, and that's ultimately more money in their pocket. It's an investment in their business. Always keep that in mind.
