2018 Macbook Air or my current laptop?

I have been wanting a macbook air for a while now and recently got the funds for one. I just wanted advice on whether it would be a backward step compared to my current laptop?

Im talking just specs non of this pc vs mac blah blah blah

dont do it is my advice, if you are gonna use it for editing and stuff then it is usefull to buy a macbook.
But if you are going to use it for anything else i would stay with the one you got already.
In that case you could invest the money you would spend on the laptop in to your ventures and make more money!.

Check out MacBook Pro. Its has better specs while having same price and battery life.
In terms of hardware your HP better of course if you don't need very long battery life.
Be aware of only 2 usb type-c ports. Transition to USB-C wasn't so hard, but count of ports is a problem sometimes.
Is you need good security setup, then its better to install Linux on your current host.

Your Hp envy wins every battle. Except display resolution.
Use the money to buy a great SSD (solid state drive) like Samsung Evo 860 series to replace your current hard drive.
SSD drives are like a mechanical hard drive on steroids because they have no moving parts. Your computer will be so fast you won't believe it.
They're easy to install. Lots of youtube tutorials to hold your hand if you've never done it before.

Go for macbook air if you want ultra lite portability with not as much power under the hood.

Use notebookcheck to compare the performance of the processors and graphic cards against each other. The rest you can compare using common sense. Although the OS is different, which i guess counts too. You must know the intended use, which qualities are more important to you. Portability, weight, graphics card?! So you can come to an objective decision.

From the looks of the MacBook Air would be a downgrade though.

2 scenarios to buy a MacBook:

1. you want to develop iOS apps, which requires OSX
2. you need a lightweight laptop with very long battery life (~10 hours). for the battery, you can buy a powerbank for $50-100

lowest spec MacBook air is definitely slower than your current laptop.
you can add an SSD for better performance, search HDD Cady (you can replace DVD drive with SSD and keep your HDD too)

I wanted a clean install and start fresh which seems more hassle trying to move the OS over so do you know if I migrate it all over and then factory reset the laptop and files that should wipe it fully, right?

I have stupid programs on my current HDD i cant seem to remove.

When you get the new ssd, it will be blank. 0 bytes written. You'll have to install Windows operating system first. Get the .iso for Windows 7/8.1/10 and make a bootable CD/USB (unless you already have it). Micorosft Windows provides some free tools from their site to get it done if you don't want to go to pirate sources.
How you import your old hdd files is up to you, many ways to skin a cat.

• Put all the important files onto a usb stick. Write down all your important programs in a txt file & re-download them later.
• Use an external usb hard drive.
  
• Use free cloud storage provider like mega (50gb) / dropbox (2gb).

I think im going to use partion wizard to clone my old hdd, move the files to usb and then reformat the ssd which has the clone on it back to fresh install. Saves me messing around with getting a boot drive for windows.

Good decision on keeping and upgrading with a SSD. You'll be amazed how fast it is
