domain hosting and registration through the same organization?

I am thinking of moving my WP blog to Namecheap. That is my registrar.
I remember reading a post that said using the same company for both things might not be a good idea. I saw this some time ago but could not find it again.

Is there cause to be concerned by havign host and registrar done by the same company?

it seems like the all host and sell domains, so I am not sure what this "cautionary" post I read might mean.

The risk of having both with the same company is if you have any problems or the company shuts down then you have lost everything.

Hosting companies are resellers, not registrars, the vast majority are resellers for Enom/Tucows. Due to the way the reselling works, that domain is registered in their name, they handle the nameserver/DNS records, and there's usually a provision stating that if your hosting is suspended, your domain is suspended as well.

If your hosting goes down, you have no provision to switch to a backup hosting company. If your site gets hacked or goes over the (usually undisclosed) bandwidth quota, you could lose your domain. If you want to switch to another hosting company entirely, your host could demand a transfer fee.

If you have your domain with an unaffiliated registrar, none of these are a concern at all.

No problem, You can host with a company that sells domain and hosting as well. Like in your case, Namecheap is a brand name they will never do anything that harm their trademark.
Expect a great service from top notch companies.

So I hit thanks for everyone.

It sounds like it is cool to go with Namecheap for both hosting and registration. Their prestige and popularity will protect me. THat makes sense to me.

Right now I use A2 Hosting, if I go to Namecheap will it be as fast, do you think..
(sometimes I do not make any on-site changes to my blog and my site speed will just drop, not because of more traffic, I don't think 400 visitors a day would take that much bandwidth, or would it> Anyway, I pay a premium price for A2 but don't really think they are doing a hell of a lot to help me. On the other hand, I don't know shit about hosting. Maybe they are working double time to help me and I an too dumb to know it)

Just by chance, who do you go to if the company I registered the domain with did decide to suspend me and then take my domain name. Is there someone internet marketers can appeal to. Like ICANN or something.

My domain is registered for several years from now. I don't want to lose it. I do try to make money with my domain but it is also personal to me. It is something i did when I was getting sober, so I want to keep it. Plus I really like the name.

According to the NameCheap Hosting Terms of Service:
"In the event of termination or suspension of Services under the above circumstances, You agree (a) that no pre-paid fees will be refunded to You; and (b) that Namecheap may take control of any domain name associated with the terminated Services, provided such domain name was registered through the domain name registration of Namecheap."

A suspension may be placed on your hosting due to a fraudulent DMCA request, a hacked plugin, a DDOS attack, and other matters completely outside your control. Even if you're 100% within the trademark and copyright laws and content guidelines, you're not really protected at all.

No. Since you legally grant ownership of the domain to the hosting company, there are no grounds for a dispute.

You may get the domain back if you have a registered trademark and fight it in court, but at that point you're looking at thousands of dollars in legal fees and a ~2 year dispute, for something that should have been nothing more than a 5-minute DNS update if you had simply kept your domain registration separate.

In my experience, the NameCheap hosting support is quite slow, and their servers have about the same performance as EIG (HostGator, etc).

If you use SSL, you might also want to note that they consider free SSL certificates to be a security risk, and they have disabled that option on their servers. You are free to use any of the paid certificates that they sell, or you may stick with an insecure HTTP connection, but non-paid certificates are not supported at all.

Before I read Stavro's post I contacted NameCheap. Their customer service for new sales is slow, who knows how bad it is if they already have your money.
I am going to keep my hosting and registration seperate. No doubt about it.

I have been looking at HostGator's Cloud Hosting. Is that OK.

I have always used Shared Hosting. So Cloud Hosting should be a step up right?

I did notice that you mentioned EIG servers. EIG must be a parent company that allows people to resell their stuff. Meaning that all their stuff is probably mediocre mixed in with a few premium type plans. So maybe I should avoid HostGator.

Here is the important part. So you can figure out what I am trying to do?

I have always had shared hosting.
I have occasionally run into resource usage problems.
I get about only 500 visitors a day.
I have about 5 landing type pages and I need all of them to load in less than 2 seconds.
I want a faster site and can only get WP Fastest Cache to take me so far, the Host is going to have to help out too.
Currently I use A2 Swift Hosting for 12.99 a month.

Would Cloud Hosting allow me to handle more visitors and let me keep page load times below 2 seconds. I prefer to be at 1 to 1.5 seconds. When it gets up to 2 seconds I feel obliged to try and fix it.

any good recommendations for Cloud Hosting - If Cloud Hosting is even what I want.

This stuff is much more complicated than I like for it to be. I may have left out very important things that I don't know need to be considered.

EIG is the hosting company, the 'brands' like HostGator, BlueHost, and others are just landing pages. It's not even reselling, and these aren't separate admin/support staff handling the accounts, this is just a method of flooding the market and catching people who want to migrate to better hosting. And thanks to their critically overloaded servers, even their highest priced plans can end up with ~10 second loading times.

If you were running into resource issues on A2, which is normally generous with their resource allocation, you should probably switch to a VPS instead of sticking with a shared plan.

Cloud hosting is always better, it can fasten the laod time of website also hostgator fascilitates you with CDN network for a quick loadtime. Hostgator cloud hosting is also reasonable.
Everyone has ups and downs with companies but hostgator is still number one hosting and for cloud hosting they are having a good price if you for several years plan.

I went with a Managed Cloud account at HostWinds. Hopefully this will be the right move. I read some bad things about them but apparently they have made some changes in the past year or so that solved the problem. So, fingers crossed!

Yes you can do both with the same company. I always recommend having your domain with a different host. The reason is if you do something they shut your account down for then it could be hard to get access to your domain name after that issue.
