I've googled up and down and only found one (quite pricey) affiliate marketing tool that shows a bit more information about interests in Facebook.

What I'd like to see is something for Facebook Ads like the many tools that exist around Google's keyword planner (e.g. keywordtool.io, keyword keg, longtail pro etc.). i.e. a tool that
- takes a given interest (keyword),
- expands it into many more search terms (Facebook itself shows just a few by default) and
- shows the number of people that "have" that interest.

Any tips?

I don't know it all, but all I can say is Facebook Pixels are your best friend in the FB ad game.

Thanks, for retargeting and post-analysis for sure. Do you also see an application for Pixels when I have to create a campaign for a new client/offer/niche?

Your making a typical mistake in thinking facebook ads are like google ads.

So even if you found such a tool it would not be of much use.

People actively search for something on google while they are interrupted from whatever they are doing on facebook.

So you should rethink your strategy.

A better approach is to first build a custom audience and then target them with your ads.

@GringoMonkey makes a lot of sense, but when a client comes to you with an offer they want advertised "right now", there's no time to "build a custom audience".

If you have clients that want something advertising "right now" then facebook is probably not the right medium to use. It is just not an effictive way to advertise unless you can build a custom audience.

Explain that you first have to build a custom audience and then advertise to be effective on facebook.

Gonna have to agree with this.

Although, one way around this if absolutely necessary is the email scraping hack;

Instead of using scraped emails from facebook pages and groups to send offers, use the emails to build a custom audience.
Scrape emails from niche/topic related groups > compile the emails and load into FB to build a Lookalike/Custom audience. The more emails the better.

Think of this as a tier one targeting method. Then when you get actual submissions, sign ups, or any other conversion actions you're looking for, build a tier 2 (a different) lookalike/custom audience on those that actually converted on your offer.

I have no problem thanking you forever, I consider myself a very grateful person ;-)
I fail to understand, however, how this is related to Facebook?
Oh I see... Please understand when Facebook uses interest targeting, they are gathering data from Google including what people type into the search bar. The world runs on Google. If you want keyword data and competitions (if you analyze these numbers properly, it will tell you exactly what you're wanting to know).

You can use any number of active tools for facebook targeting but none of them will help you much for the distance. In fact, even in facebook if you try and narrow down audiences your campaign will not have much impact as you expected. There is only one scenario where the tools or your microtargeting works, It happens only if your demographics is super wide.
