What are the Hashtag best practices?

Longer keywords or shorter?

1 or 2 hashtags in a post?

It is seen that tweets that get more engagement on twitter include hashtags. But Don't use excess hashtags.

The best practice is to use 1 or 2 hashtags per tweet. Using popular hashtags to get reach to your tweet will not work. So you need to research your hashtags and need to choose which hashtag is relevant to your post.

Since it is only allowed 140 characters on twitter, it is better not to use hashtags which are too long. Try to use shorter hashtags always.

Should I use very specific, but rather unknow hashtags or hashtags which feature a broader spectrum of users (I don't mean popular tweets)?

For example I post something about the USD would I write #USD or #currency ?

You can add both, posting two hashtags is perfectly fine. Currency is a broader hashtag than USD. It really depends on your goal. Some hashtags receive more traffic than others, but you don't necessarily want to target a too broad hashtag with a lots of traffic, because you won't get noticed in the sea of tweets, while using a mildely popular hashtag with less traffic can mean more exposure. Finding the best performing hashtags is a tricky game and requires testing. If you want some help in that regard, you may want to try Hashtagify in combination with RiteTag to optimize your tweets, including hashtags. Both has a 7-days free trial.
