Schema Markup For Local SEO

Does anyone know how much the schema markup actually helps? If you add a service area as a schema markup does it help to rank in the cities you mentioned?

Schema markup will helps your customer/user to find informative google search results.. you can update website, address, phone, fax, and operating hours under specific category..
I suggest you to use organisation schema for local Seo. You can also make use of testimonials and review schema, website schema, event schema and video schema.

For local we use Local Business but i was referring to the Schema markup for service area. In the footer we have the areas we serve and we added schema markup. Does that help improve visibility in the areas mentioned in the markup?

I suggest you to do 2 things.
1. Update your service areas in Google My Business.
2. You can update geographic service area, it helps google to identify your service area schema and listed in google search results.
Surely, It will helps to improve your business visibility for your service areas.
