When researching competition Im told to use allintitle...

My keyword tool's tutorial states that when Im searching for a niche I should use allintitle to spy on competition and use that as a reference for choosing my keyword.

One question, why? Why use allintitle? No-one searches allintitle really. So why see less comp using allintitle when people are actually searching using 'normal' (broad?) searches.

Ideas?

When you search "all in title" it gives you a look at who exactly is using that keyword in their title (most people who use it must be SEOing for it.) The reason why you see less comp is that after the first 100 results, they tend to be crap sites anyway, with "all in title" this will show you the people who are REALLY going for that keyword.

So should I base my niche projects around results I get for allintitle or broad search? E.g. when searching for competing pages do I use allintitle or broad results to determine my campaign...?

I think the thing you are looking for is who are you competing against to get to the 1st page of google. That is what matters and that is where allintitle and exact searches (in quotes) come in. There may be 500,000 broad matches, but if only 10,000 show up for your exact phrase, then when someone types in that exact keyword phrase, those 10,000 are the ones you are really competing with to get to first page. The other 490,000 should follow after those 10,000 because they are not a perfect match for the search entered like those 10,000 competitors are. That is my general understanding.

May not always be the top of the league but I think you got the jist of it.

As already mentioned allintitle will show you who has those exact keywords in their page title as opposed to a "broad" search which will show everything with those keywords in any order. So your true competition will be those that are using the exact keyword phrase. I would also take a look at the results from a search and see how many of the top ten are actually a TLD. If the top ten are not TLD you should be able to compete if you have the keyword in your domain name and use proper SEO.
