Is photoshop a neccesary evil for UI design?

I'm not sure if I understand what you mean. Do you mean themes? but I guess not.. Can you show me a template?

So, photoshop is required on large projects only where you need Ux and Ui designers? or if you are a freelancer Ui designer? can you handle everything else with a wide range of popular themes? I guess photoshop is not needed as much then right? you can certainly design a theme with code so that the elements will appear perfectly right?

Photoshop is not compulsory for normal web designing. But, when you are planning to design for UI then photoshop is mandatory.

Photoshop isn't required, it can helps when you're editing some images that will fit on the website design.
There are other tools to make a UI, for example: Sketch, Adobe XD, Invision

That's not correct: Photoshop is for normal web design, if you like to do UI design Sketch is the better choice.
But nobody did really answer the question:
No: Photoshop isn't required at all nowadays. I still make some UI/UX in Photoshop but the most elements are coded in HTML & CSS by a front-end developer, which mostly uses my Photoshop design as an example. He codes it pixel perfect so the end result is what I designed without using the .psd file.
If you use photoshop for the design or let someone design it for you you still need a front-end developer who makes a html & css version of the design.
Since Wordpress is more and more popular less people/companies order a custom design since the developing price for custom sites is way more than using a existing theme/template for Wordpress and customize these.

I think you can completely bypass ps if you are looking to create a normal looking website. For more advanced stuffs and if you need every pixel to be perfect, ps is the way to go. It is good to have working knowledge in ps if you are looking to work for a company. They will most probably ask for it.

There are numerous other solutions, you should investigate and test then choose the right tool for the job.

Well that's not extremely true, company's may use other tools like Adobe XD or Invision to create a graphic representation of the website and those tool can make animated too, like if they click on a button what will happen/ an overlay and more

Ofcourse they can. It depends on which company you are applying for. Also depends on what kind of graphics you are talking about (vector/raster). The thread was about PS and not about other software. Photoshop is good for a bunch of stuffs nevertheless. It's more like the Swiss knife lol. So, knowing the software will probably help you more often than not.

As a former webdesigner I can't agree with this. Photoshop was wide used 10-20 years ago for webdesign and even nowadays a lot of designer still work with PS. Must say that Sketch got very popular the last years as an alternative for PS.
I myself used PS from 2003 untill 2015 to design more than 450 custom websites, landing pages and UI. After completing the design in Photoshop we'd sent the .psd files to front-end developers so they could create the html & css version.
@ Illustrator: this is for vector design so could be used for web vectors but further not really ideal for webdesign.

IME Photoshop is not required. A lot of designs begin with simple html and build up as functionality requires it (form follows function).
Amazon, ebay and other large ecommerce sites don't have any artistic stuff into them, most their UI is simply usability studies applied.
But for some niches like gaming and some cryptocurrency scams it's necessary to draw some fancy ass graphics in order to get stupid idiots to throw their money at ya.
For everything else you just get pre made themes for a few dollars.
