Is Long Form Content Outdated & On It’s Way Out?

Are the long 3k - 5k word articles on there way out as we go into 2019 and beyond?

I can’t imagine these 5k word affiliate fluff articles lasting very much longer.
Curious if I should still invest in long ass content.
It’s Costing me my left nut.

I think it is really down to the niche and the audience.
You should test both with your readers and see which they prefer.

The important thing is that if you are writing about a topic, then you need to comprehensively cover that topic - for the reader of course, its going to make the article more engaging and for the search engines its going to a) pick up all the long-tail search terms and b) re-enforce the fact that your article is authoritative on the main keyword for which you are trying to rank.

Writing loads of fluff to pad an article out to xxx number of words however is definitely not a good idea IMHO.

I wouldn't throw 5k articles on my websites. 2k ones are fine most of the time.

I don't think so.

When you look at how SEO has changed over the last 5-10 years, smaller articles use to be an effective way of ranking.

Google is trying to increase the quality of the pages it increases on the first page, for those looking for information.

Google is trying to prioritise longer, well-written and well-researched articles, over short misleading and poorly written ones.

To go back to ranking shorter articles would be a backwards step to Google.

Again, I think it depends.

If you are searching for "how much thermal paste to put on a cpu" you aren't going to read 3k-5k words on it.

However, if you're searching "What does a CPU do?" you're going to be fine with 3k-5k.

It's all about intent.
