which has better career prospects? Please advise

I guess it depends on where you live. Since I know how to manage digital advertising and have a bit of knowledge in internet marketing, it's raining jobs for me both in Paris (my hometown) and Dubai (where I live now).

Definitely digital marketing has more scope, it is quite diverse and gives you lot of options to grow and earn quickly. But if you want stable career growth I would suggest go with Desktop support engineer. Digital marketing trends keeps changing from time to time, something which is in demand right now may be completely useless in future.

According to this site - https://www.payscale.com - the digital marketing role receives a 20% higher salary.
However, I would argue there is a lot of potential for each role - for example, as a desktop engineer you have many prospects to move up the ladder - for example network administrator, systems engineer, head of IT or whatever.
Digital marketing is probably similar as well with lots of scope to move further up the ladder.
I think really what you should be thinking about is where your skills are in relation to those two roles and also what you are most passionate about.

i am 36 years old male formerly in education industry making a career switch.
i am looking for stability. I am from Singapore.
i have heard many horror stories from IT professionals claiming that IT industry is age sensitive and that people above age of 40 are quickly retrenched. this is also true as employers are biased and likely to draw from a much younger talent pool of younger professionals.
My hope is that one day i would be able to start my own business coupled with the skills that i have picked up from the IT industry.
I know digital marketing allows me to do that. how about desktop support engineer/technician? does it allow me skills to start a business ?

I would say go with digital marketing. It would even allow you to start your own business later down the road if you wanted to.

I'd suggest digital marketing, besides financial benefit it's a constant learning process.
