Fair hourly rate for a Web Developer in Germany?

Hi there, recently i have an offer for freelancing in Germany, Munich. But i’m not sure how much should i set my personal hour rate, since i dont know really well German market.

Can you give me some hints what would be the right estimate...

Look up some freelance job sites from Germany and gather data. You can make reasonable enough conclusions imo.

- Tell us if you made an open source contribution

Also, the final rates depend upon what the buyer can pay and what's his/her perception of quality. To a few cheap buyers, code is a code and they think $0.5 an hour guy and 100 per hour guy are the same.

I’m not living there, im living in my country which is not as expensive as Munich. But the company which needs my experience is from there. I will be working remotely

you can't charge $30/50/hour working as a waiter. No matter wherever you live. Waiters in NY can't charge these working rates. Same is with being a developer, simple website developers or devs doing basic WP customization don't get paid a lot these days.

People are savvy nowadays, why pay someone $45 or $70 an hour when there are plenty of credible freelancer platforms, where you can get someone for $10 who is possibly more experienced etc?

Because depending on the company paying someone $10 p.h may just seem to good to be true, bigger companies have bigger budgets and if a company goes looking to hire or bring someone in on a contract basis 9/10 they will pay what someone is worth to do the job.

Imagine trying to charge someone like Sony $10 p.h they would never hire you. Sure you might do work for them on $10p.h (maybe) but I guarantee you, you would have been subcontracted via 3 other people and the person on top is making min 10x that without doing anything. It's the world we live in.

I have a friend who runs a large building company for one area he will charge £35,000 to replace a roof whereas to get any work in the city (20 miles up the road) he will charge double that just to get someone to accept his quote.

For me, my day rate outside of London is $485 per day, inside and around London I get a minimum of $650 for doing exactly the same kind of work..

Working hourly is a great way to kill a working business relationship. It's unfair for both parties, because it sets each party against the other (employer doesn't want to pay more, employee wants to work more to be paid more) and if you're good at your job you'll end up with less hours. Depending on the employer, they might not even accept something like 100eur an hour no matter how long the work takes you.

Depends on what you are doing. Know your value. If what you do can be done by someone else easily, you shouldn't set the price too high. If you got special knowledge, lots of experience or anything like that, set it high.

They won't pay you same as a german. They want to pay you much less, thats why they contact someone from your country. Keep that in mind.
