What Should I Put On My Software Developer Portfolio Website?

I'm currently doing my masters degree in Computing and I plan to apply for software developer jobs next year.

I plan to build a website to complement my github & linkedin profiles, but I'm not 100% sure what to put on there and how to structure it.

• Do you know developer portfolio websites which can serve as good examples?

• As a career entrant with not so much real life work experience: Would you include your hobbies in order to emphasise your softskills? If yes, how? Blog posts?

• Any other advice you can give me?

Don't include hobbies.

Join upwork or some other jobs site and do some cheap jobs to build up your portfolio.

Either that or get some real world jobs to build the portfolio. Don't include your hobbies, headhunters will know instantly that you're trying to inflate your resume.

While you can't do some real job, social programming networks is the way to go.

Create some side projects and put it on github. Host everything you can. Stackoverflow is a good place to be to.

Post up some of your projects on github for potential developers to review your code. I've found that companies want to see if you have what it takes prior to even offering an interview.

a simple and good way to make good income and portfolio if you have the skills is purchase an extended licenses of a WordPress plugin build a complete site using it integrate it to your custom design and list a theme on code canyon github etc your customers will easily help you build portfolios sites using your theme etc while earning from sales.your basically hitting two bird with one stone,i personally think timmyomahony.com looks boring for a professional site.

A master degree doesn't build website, he/she builds systems (I'm not talking operating system but business systems). A CV of a web designer and a master degree are different. A master degree NEEDS experience instead of showing some image.

For example:

FAKECOMPANY LLC - 2017-2018 System integration between the ERP and the front end. We worked designing and developing the interaction between the ERP and a front end designed on Java and using.... (you could use the word "we" or also "I")

I talked to a couple people working in the industry and visited two career fairs and here is what I'm planning to do:

• I talked to a few businesses that take student employees on and I'm going to apply for a handful of those so I'm gonna have 1yr of real world work experience when I'm done studying
• Realised I programmed tools in the past which could actually be useful for some people and I'm gonna revamp the code where needed and then put it on Github
• Checking out some open source projects - maybe I'll find something that I enjoy contributing to
• Made a blog where I showcase projects I do in my freetime (eg. playing around with my raspberry pi) and talk about programming stuff I cannot put on github
• As someone who always enjoys to learn new things, I'll make sure to get myself some certificates (even if it's just from some free courses) to back it up
• Obviously making sure I'm somewhat active on LinkedIn and polish my profile on there
