Can you recover from an over-optimization penalty?

The Big G removed me for my two best keywords. I'm just here hoping someone knows a little more about this and can tell me how they recovered (if they did).

The advice I got:

"Our system shows 6000 backlinks to your site. The majority of them being your exact keyword. The site most likely got an over-optimization penalty. You will need to disavow all the low quality links, and build a more varied backlink profile."

Hmmm, where to begin....

The suggestion sounds solid - disavow low quality links that have exact match keywords/anchors and build links using raw URL, brand keywords and generic keywords like click, visit our site, etc ... though recovery can take a while.

6000 exact match anchor links? woah. the advice is clear - disavow the low quality links and build new ones with very varied anchors.

Go for Google search console specific url backlink profile, export them then check each url from ahrfs and find the high obl pages, disallow them

Check your anchor text using scrape box anchor text check plugin and understand where over optimized keywords, remove low quality links from them,

Then improve the diversity and send good social signal for them, it will help to recovey

For some odd reason Google Search Console is saying I have only 5 external backlinks and the anchor text is a jumble of my store products :S. Is there another tool?

Yes you can..check the quality of the links there are many back link checkers available available. Remove any low quality links an spammy ones. Eventually u will see results but it takes time.
