Is there display ads affect rankings? Anyone explain me

I have been trying very hard to build backlinks. But my competitor is doing nothing. And doing display ads(google double-click) . Is it helpful for him to rank top?

Tested 2 sites with and without ads, notice that ads didn't effect on ranking. The second site (without ads) even get a higher rank after I add some juicy content on it.
Unfortunately, no one can tell it 100% sure except Google

How do you know he's doing nothing?

He's probably building links that you can't see in checkers.

From my experience, no, ads don't increase organic rank.
