I'm in a stable job at the moment but I want to have more free time. I have skills in Python which I know is valuable but before leaving a solid job I'd like to build up a side income that is > £500 a month and actually figure out how to monetize my skills outside of being a typical developer, is there anything I'd be able to do from home for maybe 20/30hours a week?

Just scale up what you're doing. Up the hours doing Python.

Consider becoming a BHW seller and advertising your services here.

To me, starting your own business and wanting to cut down work hours at the same time sounds very contradictory, but i might be wrong.

find clients, work as a part time freelancer, and start saving money from both your work and freelancing, once you have enough money to make you float for about 6 months, and your freelancing makes you about 70% of your salary then you can think about quitting your day job, otherwise you'll be risking a lot

Well it is true when you are selfemployed, you mostly work when you want (depends of the business you are running) but from my experience, you work more than 9 to 5. It has its pros and cons like everything in life. I mostly had more free time being employed by somebody. The thing I like being selfemployed is I dont even feel like I am working (I own a hostel) I just enjoy hanging out with my clients...ah and in your case I would start with freelancing platforms

something tangible within say 3-6months of work that i just have to maintain with maybe 2 hours a week after that
