I recently bought a sidebar banner link with keyword in the ALT tag for 1 month on a news media site (DA 60). The link was d0follow.

Ever since, my ranking for that particular keyword has dropped by 30 positions. The only thing that link did was increase my site DA by 6 as that banner was shown on around 65K pages (GWT shows 65K new links from that site).

It did bring in a lot of referral traffic though.

Need some advice, should I continue it, or stop it?

Do you have any penalties in the search console?

maybe it is just coincidence or just google dance? lets hear from the experts, for sure they will comment here.

I do have sidewide backlinks on some money sites and run for years never have such problem. I believe it's only coincidence case. Have you check your search console reports

if you have the balls, you can try it for another one month, to see if the backlinks did make it dance a little though.

No penalties in search console. Only that specific keyword has dropped, other keywords are running fine as before.

Been more than a month now, wonder how long the dance lasts for.

Don't have the patience or want to take the risk. I stopped the ad yesterday, so today, the ranking for that specific keyword bounced back to its original ranking. It was 45 before, and it was losing around 7 positions every week the time the ad was running. Surprised, it quickly bounced back right after I removed that ad.

It dpends if the banner ad is no follow it wont affect your SEO, but if the banner is do follow with those 65K pages, its probably is spam. Ask your provider about it, if he do it do follow or not? if not, its probably just a google dance for sure.

Like what others have said, could be just google dance. Rarely a single link that affects your ranking wildly. Else I would have no competitors for all my keywords :devil::alien:
