For the most part yes .com .org and .net are considered top extensions; on the other hand, .info is not considered strong, weak rather.

which is incorrect; if so, why does everyone and their mother want the .com before all?

So imho, it does not matter too much, just a tiny bit, I would not say it does not matter at all though: get the .com .org or .net if you can, if not you can live without them, .io is poular too.

Looking from google perspective they treat all TLDs same, but when it comes to user experience people mostly trust to .com. I had a few situations where people assumed that my website is .com. I mean we are in 2018 and some people still think that all sites end with .com.
 
It doesn't really matters for Google, but for stupid people internet is facebook only, so nothing to be afraid of ;)
