SEO question about authority

Hi guys,

I Am reading a book on SEO, im trying to compare the benefits to the risks. Im starting to understand SEO in some depth, one question I have is the following.

If I get links to a post on my website, will this create authority to the entire website or just that sub address, e.g if I create a new post, will that new post be easier to rank due to having authority links on a different post?

Does the authority carry over to the entire website basically. And each post I rank does it make it easier to rank the next?

It depends on your site structure. Let's say you get some external links to your homepage (in order to make this easy to understand we assume that links are from a niche-related, high autority website), and your site has a proper internal link structure (all related articles are properly linked with a good on-page), then the link juice will flow through all your articles. This type of links will give to your site more authority over time.
Let's now instead check what happens if you point your backlinks to a single small post on your website (which we assume is linked to the parent page). In this case those backlinks will help you rank the article itself but they won't pass link-juice back to the main pages. Thus, your site won't get much authority from this links, even tho you might be able to rank the single article for a specific keyword.

Moreover you should also consider the anchor texts you use when creating backlinks. Brand and Naked anchors will help you gain more trust and more authority while partial and exact match will help you rank articles.

Ahh right thats very informative thank you I had been reading up on hierarchy structures to website, so what your saying is they both have benefits, e.g linking to the home page will share link juice to the posts while linking to the article itself will only share link juice to links within that article.

Basically Linking to the article will help rank the article better but linking directly to the homepage will share the juice so each article wont have 100% juice. Quick question, If the home page shares juice to the pages further down, is this a fixed percentage? e.g would it give lets say 70% to every future post, or would the percentage keep reducing every post I create.

There's no real formula, otherwise everyone would know Google algo
You just need to analyze your competitors and do better than them.

Yes it does. It carries over your entire site. Also make sure your website has good on page optimisation and are internally linked.
