I want to create a directory submission website. But before create, I need to know the future of directory. I mean - will it be a loss project?

Absolutely not.

In terms of SEO... definitely not.

But you can create paid directory of services like Yellow pages for example. Companies would pay you for listing because you can bring them traffic/leads. Not rankings.

I was thinking the same. Then I ranked (local) crypto site with directories and forums only. True, competition was not hard, but the majority of keywords started at page 3, and after the links (80% no follow) now are top 3.. so yeah.

Good job for thinking outside the box. However, the general sentiment for directories nowadays is fairly clear.

There aren't many single link types you can say are or aren't important anymore. Quality is all that truly matters. However, most directories were very spammy back in the days when I used them... so be careful with dropping links. If there is a good niche related directory you feel is actually useful and not spammed then you can give it a shot. But you certainly can't set SeNuke to give you a good old fashioned directory blast like you did in 2011.

I can't give you a specific because I don't know what your niche is. But for some niches... say Star Trek fan stuff, there might be a couple small quality directories that are highly relevant and not spammed. Finding them may not be easy, but those would be ok links to have. They won't, however, be amazingly powerful links that are capable of rocketing you up the rank. They simply help you a little, but do a lot of good at giving you highly niche relevant links... which is important to Google even if the link itself isn't full of tons of juice.

Directory submission sites in the traditional sense are more or less useless, but you could start a link submission or curation site, similar to Bootstrapper.io, etc.
