Okay, so some of us have gotten hit pretty badly by this last update. The weird thing is that one of my sites that is made up of the best content out of several websites I own -- got hit the hardest. 80% reduction in traffic for a week now.
I have been racking my brain about this, because I know my content is more significant and much more thorough than my competitors. Seriously, a fucking Quora page is outranking me for one of my best performing keywords. This site has been resistant to pretty much every other "quality" update Google has pushed out for the last 2 years.
Anyway, fair warning: this MAY or MAY NOT be the cause of everyones issues lately.
But after some digging into my website in the SERPs, I have been noticing a whole bunch of content that should not be indexed in the first place.
As an example, these are literally hundreds of these types of links in the SERPs
https : // example dot com/post-with-an-image-inside/image-in-post
Although these weird links in the SERP's are showing for an image, these images are NOT attached in wordpress - they are merely there for decoration and making the site more engaging (arrows, note images, things of that nature)... and yes, I have changed the setting in Yoast months ago, but it seems something related to this issue.
If anyone has experienced a rank drop, please do a manual site:yourwebsite dot com lookup and see if you can find them in the results.
Also, if someone knows why this is happening on the site, any fix would be appreciated.
Cheers!

- When clicking on the result, it redirects to the image on the page (e.g. example dot com/wp-content/images/image-in-post.jpg)
- I have NEVER seen these on my own "site:" parameter search in Google, which leads me to believe this could be a major issue
- Websites using Yoast are in the MILLIONS, and this could possibly be a reason for the ranking drops lately.
- On some further research, the developer removed the option to set "noindex" on attachment pages for images.
- He also removed the option to redirect attached images to the post it belongs to, and instead only left it to redirect to itself.
