When it comes to SEO, a lot of what works and what doesn't is bounded in the technical limitations of what it's possible for search engines (eg, Google) to calculate.

A huge amount of internet marketing is nothing to do with this (eg, it's marketing), but fundamentally SEO itself is based on 'beating the Google algorithm', and therefore understanding what it's possible or impossible for the algorithm to do gives you a clear upper hand over those without that understanding.

tl;dr: I'm wondering what technical background BHW users have. I have frequently seen people here claiming that it's impossible for Google to do things which are clearly possible, or possible to do things which are clearly impossible.

So...what's your technical background?

EDIT: To give a little more background, my thinking here is how you would give an answer to a question like "How can Google detect duplicate content?" to determine at what point Google will not be able to see duplicated content is really duplicated from the perspective of an algorithm.

I'd also love to hear what other people think about the general technical education of the SEO industry and how much it matters, etc! What are your thoughts?

I taught myself to code because I wanted to produce things which I did not feel comfortable releasing to a developer (Even under an NDA).

I now produce botting software for my own personal use.

The biggest compliment being was when some of my software was reported as being 'from a possible state actor'.

Interesting, why not just incorporate a company and actually hire employees? Never being able to outsource your work sounds eventually problematic to me

I have severe trust issues when it comes to business.

Keep the software in house and sell what you produce.

If you start releaseing software the only good that will come from it is that companies will patch the holes.

Ah yes, when it comes to black hat SEO or black hat marketing tactics these definitely seem like words to live by.

Zero technical background, unfortunately .. I can safely start a PC and using the "double tap" technique open multiple programs but that's about it. And tried to install WordPress once but that didn't end well

On a more serious note - i don't think you need any special skills for SEO, follow a few simple things and if you picked the right KWs they will rank

seo a art , the algo changes and unless you got full exspirence in html and css and common sence will not be beat.

I'm not saying you need any special skills or qualifications for SEO, I'm mainly just curious how this community fits into this poll :)

This being said, there are some things where understanding how the algorithms must work is advantageous. One example is duplicated content. I've seen numerous BHW members claim that even having a single sentence on your page which has been copied from somewhere else factors against your SEO negatively. Anyone with even a basic understanding of algorithms and computer science will know this is absolutely ridiculous.

This isn't to say that you need to understand the algorithms to have that knowledge, but if there's two people on here, one saying that you can never have a sentence the same as anywhere else, and someone else saying you can...who do you believe?

you are so wrong in your thinking
you said this .

any duplicate sentances is a google penalty in google eyes , seo not programming skill it a algo and it got rules and if google says dup content is a problam it a problam, you can not make the rules up .

you can not go against seo rules or Google's rules there here to help .

your statement incorrect.

a person that duplicates sentances is writting spam content in google eyes is a penalty.

websites that got spam only last weeks , the idea of seo is keep it there for a very long time clean.

dup content websites get penaltys and get ban, and eventually de indexed.

Yeah, see, this is exactly what I mean.

Anyone with a background in algorithms would understand how absolutely ridiculous it is to claim that any sentence which exists anywhere else on the entire Internet being duplicated onto your website counts against your SEO.

it does fullstop ....

the whole point is no dup.

content dup is only 1% of seo problams your be ban , there many over factors .

Just curiosity :)

And what is this based on? Did you write the Google Search weighting algorithms?
on years of successful websites that give me meny thousands yearly ..

Seo a art must be done properly

you can argue with me all day dup content is bad .

And do you think that the merchants that ran successful shipping empires in Ancient Rome understood how to forecast ocean storms, and that their sacrifices to Neptune really helped their ships avoid calamity?
