When building links should you send them to the home page or to the exact topic page.
If i send them to the home page that could make the home page stronger and thus all the pages attached to that page would be come stronger

on the other hand i would think that if my exact page was about baseball bats
but my site is mainly about sports equipment. Id i did a guess post on baseball bats
I would want to send them to sportsequipment.cccc/baseballbats
rather then sportsequipment.cccc/
Am I over looking something?

Hello Mate,

Exact topic page if direct relevance.

Sports equipment (sale or product listing) - Homepage

Rest - Exact topic

You can do an excerpt on the front page to attract readers.

Cheers,
C.

Well, to put simply... Those website who are nailing it in #1 position, they don't do this. If u check it in ahrefs or any tools, they aren't even linking a single backlink to their target page.

Link diversity is important, but I would recommend most of your links going to homepage and have good onpage SEO to rank inner pages.

How do I know maybe they have a hidden pbn.
One of the keywords i looked at my comp has on appearance (maybe hidden pbn) a below average backlink strategy have a number of domains pointing to inner pages and they are ranking in the top 3.

Each home page it's much stronger than subpages, because of site structure and most of backlinks pointing to home page.
It's without sense to push there another valuable link, except than you using EMD domain and/or your home page is also landing page.
