How's it going, guys? So, the other day I was browsing the net and I came across a website with content in a few languages. There wasn't anything fancy about it (the site), just a simple domain with mixed content that was arranged in different categories; each one containing content in a specific language.

I would imagine that the purpose of doing this is to attract more traffic from different geographic locations. But, wouldn't this actually confuse the search engines? And, even if it didn't, is there a correct way to do something like this to improve/increase rankings?

I know that it's a bit difficult to explain with words but here's more or less the structure that I'm talking about.

Domain: arecipesdomain.com

Menu with following categories: Recipes in English | Recipes in French | Recipes in German|

Content: All content is unique. The recipes in English are completely different from the ones in French and the ones in German.

What do you guys think? Is doing a website with content in multiple languages worth it or is it just a waste of time?

Many sites are like that, take wikipedia as a start. And google understands that well (ain't they in multiple countries themselves?). As long as the site is well organized, it should work fine and bring traffic from many countries.

That's what I figured. Although, I checked a random Wikipedia page and when I switch the language it goes to a subdomain.

For example:

English page - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/randompage
Portuguese page - pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/randompage

Maybe they just do it so it looks more organized?
