Hostgator can detect IP through Proxy?? wtf

I am having a strange problem.. I am using an L1 High Anonymity proxy. When I go to sites like whatismyipaddres.com, it says that I am in Indonesia (but it says "suspected proxy server").

Now, when I got to hostgator and try to make an order, is says "For Fraud Prevention purposes, we have:
__________ recorded as your IP Address"

The problem is, somehow it actually says my real IP address, not the proxy I am hiding behind. How can this be? I deleted all my cookies (including flash), and I am behind a proxy, so how the hell can hostgator know what my real IP is??

Any ideas?

ye some proxies send the header x-forwarded-for containing your real IP.

Not all proxies are created equal, read up on the different types of proxies, obviously, the one you have announces itself as a proxy and passes your true IP address.

a proxy does not always equal anonymity.

You need to check your proxy using a proxy judge. Do a search for one and you will see how transparent ot not your proxy is.

In my opinion, proxies are never the safest.... Websites can easily capture your real IP if javascript / java / flash embedding is enabled. Php / Cgi based web proxies would offer a better cover over the http proxies... The better would be VPN's .

Or socks proxies that capture all website traffic (For example using freecap) btw why sign-up to hostgator under a proxy instead of your own IP.

Might not be the best choice to sign up using a public proxy anyway, not if you want to use that account for something serious.
Might work well but public proxies are the most risky ones, unstable, heavily abused, many are monitored (honeypots) or operated illegal.

Well I think with hostgator you have to pay with your cc or paypal (that's verified) anyways, so I guess I would have to get a vcc.. Or get all my hosting and stuff from another source. What I could do about the proxy situation though, is just use my universities internet, since they would have no idea who it was if they tracked it..

Or if you got caught, couldn't you just say that the website and the hosting is all yours, but you were doing a JV with some guy and he was the one doing all the illegal shit through your accounts?

All they would have to do is prove you knew about it or were involved and youre on the hook for everything. If you ever did get caught for whatever it is you're doing, it's not gonna be some hokey cop investigating - it will be bigger fish like the FBIs fraud division.

To answer your proxy problem though - you're using a free proxy. You get what you pay for. If a website is spitting out your real IP, the proxy is sending a standard proxy header revealing your true IP. Test other proxies or try a VPN service, or better yet SSH tunnel through your webhost . I use my dreamhost account for just that and used a VCC to signup for 2 years.

I'm getting them to sign up for free trial offers, so I doubt the FBI would go out of their way to try and find me.. Or even pursue an investigation.
