Background: Made account in 2014, skim read BHW for ages, never posted too much. Still bit of a newbie

But now i'm back.

I want to understand why people are using the free blogger and Wordpress sites to get links.

Example: If I create a bunch of wordpress sites related thematically to my money site, then slowly point links to main site, will this help with ranking?

People make them because they're easy to create and you can spam them with T2/3/4 etc links.

To answer your example question: yes, you can do that. Although I suggest mixing up web2.0 platforms rather than just using Wordpress

People use web 2.0 because they have no skill to get good links. Even a half retarded monkey can get web 2.0 created.
IMO they are too much hassle to bother with. They get deleted after a while, accounts get banned, etc. And even if they don't they wont help you much with ranking.

Web 2.0s are free to register. Spending an hour or 10-20usd you can get a relevant and unique article with a link back to your website.

- Give diversification
- Affordable

Con’s:
- Can get banned with no reason
- Give very small value

They’re neither bad nor awesome. It’s just an instrument that can fit your context.

Yes sure you can link your WordPress web 2.0 to your main website. People use them because it is free, easiest way to build backlinks to your website. However, make sure to build backlinks from other web 2.0.

IMO, those free Wordpress and Blogger can be a source for links, and at one time, Wordpress blogs were so powerful, that when you submit anything, it gets ranked on the first page SERP after a gigantic contextual blast - it was an extremely good parasite indeed.
Then WP started to enforce stricter rules, and whenever they detect links, or in-bound spam links, or anything suspicious such as embedding your affiliate link, your account gets removed immediately after that.
Though blogger is a little bit more lenient, still, overdoing would get your site removed very speedily as well.
But if the WP site sticks, and if your link checks out, it is a good addition to your link profile, as google recognize the difficulty in getting a spam link onto WP respectively, due to the security measures that they have enforced.
