yes, its totally free to host & ssl is free too if you have a custom domain

yes, i have nothing against wordpress. I use it myself for some projects. But a blog doesn't need to be resource heavy if its a personal or hobby blog. And you can use Jekyll for multi author commercial blogs too. Many news sites already use SSGs. But if you are a technical person and you don't want to make your website resource heavy then SSG is good option.

who said I don't have money. The technology wordpress is built on is outdated. Look at how many companies are switching from LAMP stack to MEAN stack. And even if wordpress is fast it needs too many resources. I have a VPS where I host one of my client's woocommerce store. For a store you will need a CMS but you won't need a CMS which uses database for a blog. Lots of big news sites have switched to GatsbyJS which is another SSG.

i use netlify too as it has free ssl option & povide free dns management through NS1

Jekyll supports blogging but I don't know about advertising on it as you would need to find templates that support ads
