I keep reading that i need to build an email list but why? Nothing i have read mentions how to turn that list into money. Can someone please point me towards a good article on this?

Building email list is the best IM practice since beginning thoigh most marketers dont do it as it requires personal interaction. People trust a face while buying and if you are building a list when people know they are subscribing to your newletter their chances of buying are pretty high. Also those who subscribe to your list did that since they were interested in your offering

So i just send out emails to the whole list and put an affiliate link in it ?

Write a good email with the affiliate link

Lets say you were able to collect 5k emails of people who are highly interested in making money online. You can simply email them all at once using an autoresponder and think how cool it’d be to reach 5000 targeted audience for free. You can simply sell your own products or sell affiliate products as long as you stick to the niche.
