In my opinion the best option is second one.

none of those options are ideal, sidebar and footer links regularly get ignored. Your best option would be a backlink inside an article on the frontpage or an inner page. But definitely inside relevant content that is contextual and niche-specific.

i am writing about an article about our site and the news is going to publish it on their internal pages. that article plus side bar link on front page
