Does Any One Actually Want a Self Driving Car?

It's a double edged sword. Living in Houston, I dont think 99.8% of the people on the road should be alive. Traffic jams in 5 lane roads in the middle of a work day. Why aren't these people at work?!?

Automation could work in the sense that all driving/merging could be meticulously timed. Fuck, if it's advanced enough, there wouldn't be any more need for stop lights at intersections either. If everyone was in 1 model vehicle, on a single grid, the timing could slow and speed up cars on the ENTIRE GRID to allow for the cars to space themselves out enough for cars to maintain a constant flow at all times. No more of the slinky effect.

On the other hand, I'm a die hard horsepower nutjob, and this goes against every horsepower fiber in my body.

LOS ANGELES (KGO) --
Video was captured of the moment a Tesla burst into flames in Los Angeles.

The car reportedly belongs to Hollywood director and producer Michael Morris.

TIMELINE: ABC7 investigates deadly Tesla crash on Hwy 101

Nobody was hurt. Morris' wife says the car was not in an accident before Saturday's fire broke out.

Tesla called the incident an "extraordinary unusual occurrence." The company is investigating.

This follows other incidents involving Tesla, including a deadly accident in Mountain View that raised questions about the car's self-driving system.

It's not clear if this Tesla was on auto-pilot.

Personally, I think this would be better with self-driving air crafts (until we live in a Jetsons world where everyone has a flying UFO). On the road, people are unpredictable, and machines cannot always predict how a person works and respond accordingly. The only fix for this I could see would be making one-way, one-lane roads for self-driving cars only, but I dunno if that could possibly ever work.

The possibilites of self driving cars is insane. Imagine a really heavy traffic city like bangkok. Replace all inner city viechles with self driving cars and buses that work similar to uber/carpools. Oh my god that would be insanely awesome.

A person usually drives their car to work and it just stands there in the parking lot all day. A car like this, would be in use all day. Would be SO much less traffic, and much more environmentalfriendly etc etc.

But yes, there are creepy things about it too obviously.

In future it might be dope, if it can ensure no accidents and proper following rules so I don't get fined. As per now it's just a concept which is developing. If a self driving car can be as good as an avg. driver then HELL YEAH!!! I'd love to have it drive for me while I take nap in the back seat. But as per now I don't think the future is too far.. I just wanna see how much can we advance in technology in next 100 years, we already came a massive way in the past 100 years.

Technically, we've advanced extremely in the last 20 years, not 100 years. At the current rate, 10 years is a long time, with so much research being done throughout the entire world, shared information between countries and/or nations, we're not sure what to expect at the current rate of advancement.

Technology is helping us advance extremely quick, this began early 2000's, it's been 18 years and humanity has accomplished so much in such a short time. There are theories that thousands of years ago humanity was at a level we can't even comprehend at the moment, studies showing things around the world that we cannot accomplish today nor understand it.

I'm sure most of us 1990 kids thought of this concept before, how we were born in a time of huge transition in the world.

Now, let me say one thing... yes, in 100 years we've progressed so much as well, but only after the industrial revolution back in the early 1800's.

yeah man agreed, and i totally agree that we may be technologically advanced than previous humans but the humans before us were more advanced than us. There's so much text written from those times of things which we can't help but deny it.. but i feel than all of these texts can't be bullshit since they come from different places in the world. There's unlimited stuff to see and understand in this earth but our life is damn short to see anything at all.

I always wanted to have one. Xmatik apparently has one to add to older cars too... Lol. Ah maybe one day. And as far as safety the accident ratio compared to humans is not even comparable, but of course you are always going to have some donkey not knowing how to drive.
