Is private domain registration important at all?

Do you all bother with private registration on your domains?
Are there good reasons to use it or to not use it?
Or just use fake info?
Or use real info?

I always no matter what use private. I just dont like people to know where I live and phone number etc. just from knowing my domain name. I dont know how you can use fake info. Most places enter the same details you used to pay. So IMO always use private registration.

I have private registration on all my domains, it really depends on the person and what you are hosting other then that, its all on ur budget.

use internet.bs....free private and it's pretty cheap. I bought my e-whoring domain from them after someone here told me about it.

I always use namecheap.com I think they have free private also. I haven't checked recently though so dont hold me to that. Hope that helps.

I always use private registration. You can always upgrade your domain for private registration if you haven't done it when you register it. And yes with godaddy if you register 4 domains or more at one time you get free private registration.

yeah i pretty regret renewing my 3 domains at godaddy a week ago. should've just transferred it at namecheap. free privacy + SSL i think.

If you register a domain & then make it private, they can still see the previous registration if they are digging, so it's pretty obvious you still are the owner if you don't do it right from the jump.

I used to use 1&1, but hate them. Aside from them being slow & a pita to deal with, I have a friend who got sent to collections because they auto renewed a domain she no longer wanted even though her credit card had expired.

As for fake info - should be easy enough with a prepaid gift card. I haven't tried it though & was curious if anyone bothers or if they just use private reg.

It appears private reg is the winner.

I private reg. all my domains:

- privacy
- spam prevention
- seo (Google uses registration data to track website networks by correlating owner information)

I use 1and1 now. I used to use http://www.fxdomains.com whom I really have been pleased with in the past but, 1and1 is a lot more cost effective so I've been transferring a lot of my domains. Don't get me wrong though FX really has been great. especially when I had multiple accounts with various domains and needed to merge them... It was a simple over the phone procedure they asked a few security questions, etc. and it was taken care of.

I have multiple 1and1 accounts by accident (long story) contacted them and they want me to fill out some bull$hit form and mail it to them to transfer the freaking accounts to myself. WTF??? 1and1 also has a weird billing process... I get paypal invoices like 3 days later??? IDK. there not to bad overall though. And I have a lot of domains so the savings is significant for me.

... GoDaddy has been an absolute hassle, time waster, and royal pain in the @$$. Do NOT Reg. w/ them... God, I can't put my hatred for them in words... Possibly the worst registrar ever!

Yep, another vote for private domain registration. Pretty much anyone in our line of work wants as much anonymity as possible.

I have read from Jeremy Palmer that private registration can affect seo (looks spammy or suspicious). Now I do not believe everything I read and I know it sounds crazy, but anything is possible (especially with G). I figured this guy is a well know super affiliate, so he must have some knowledge.

If I were going to use private reg, I would use NameCheap. There are no extra charges and no hassles like with GoDaddy.

Edit - My comments were for whitehat only. Blackhat must use private registration at all times.

What Jeremy said may be true, but just fyi I have several sites that rank on the first page of very competitive niches, and every single one of them is private (through Namecheap, which I endorse).

Also, regarding 1and1, I would *HIGHLY* suggest people do NOT use them. They are a total pain in the balls to deal with and they highjacked 200+ domains of mine four years ago when they auto-renewed about 50 .info domains that I had written telling them NOT to auto-renew. So, I refused to pay, and they kept my other domains. Stupid bastards, I still get pissed thinking about those jerks.

same here. You piss someone off and they post your info all over the web just by looking you up. Private registration for an extra $10 year is well worth it.

Nane.com does give it free but like mentioned here G may sometimes penalise a private domain reg if it is only for 1 yr.. multi domain reg using private dont seem to matter but 1 yr private does raise a red flag on G.

but heres my tip.. why use your real details anyway?? they never check them, plus if they do query you they give you a chance to verify and change if incorrect, use an address and tel number similar but exact to avoid any unwanted stalking.

Private registration has its costs ($$, SEO, Google sniffing, and other). But information secrecy is priceless and needs to be done.

Let's break this down a little: With one exception, the ONLY email I have ever gotten based on the information in any of my several hundred domain registrations is spam.

Sooooooo, what I do on some domains (not all, but especially those used for *ahem* monitization of various sorts) is simply...

USE MADE-UP INFORMATION - EXCEPT FOR THE EMAIL ADDY!

And I use gmail or yahoo accounts for that.

The one exception is the occasional 'your domain is going to be automatically renewed' notice from the registrar, and the ICANN notice that the registrar relays asking me to CONFIRM my fake information once a year.

The registrar absolutely does not give a crap if they get their $6.50/year on your domain. ICANN is a freaking joke, and the only ones left are the a**holes who send me email coming from .ru and .cn domains (which I've filtered out at the server).

You do what you want. I'll keep being Mr. Longstick who lives on 1234 Ballstone Drive, Squatville OH 12346. I love (fake) living in the midwest!
