What is a review copy?

Pardon my silliness but I've been seeing people asking for a review copy for some time yet I still don't know what it is to this day. Care to explain to me what it really is?

If you are not a seller then you dont have to worry about that.
Its a free service/product request for the Marketplace seller.

The interesting thing about review copies (from my POV as a noob) is that the review is only really given by a minor %age of the people asking for a review copy.
I believe for many it has become a more friendly way of asking for a freebie or at least a discount.
