I've noticed one of my sites that has been stable for years has took a significant drop in traffic over the weekend. It doesnt look like I have a manual action as I have no message.

Has anyone else noticed anything?

I dont think so?
If there are some major changes with the algo. then your rank will be dropped ot increased a lot. And everyone will be affected for that but till we've not received any news of that.

And Google always do minor changes/ Updates with their Algo, and thats very common.

yeah, i have felt some of the impact of the minor changes recently. But this time it was a big decrease! I did no index some tag pages the other day thinking it would prevent duplicate. I wouldnt of thought it would of had a negative impact though :(

I did experience fluctuations in early May, but not ever since. In fact, the ranking kinda improved starting June this month.
Are you sure it wasn't a manual penalty? If it is, you can always try disavow the links, and see if that works.

I haven't noticed anything. But with Google, I'm not entirely surprised. You can't really expect when they're going to change something, try giving it a week, tops, Then check again.

Google's AI constantly makes adjustments. Might have messed with something in OP's niche, but not what we used to call an "update" for sure.

@blackcatburgular Out of curiosity; is this a WP site with Yoast SEO v7.0 - 7.0.2 installed?

Nope version 4.4 but after seeing people complaining about that update I was messing round with the indexation settings and I think I may have done something.

As my rankings have dropped my "no indexed" pages in search console have increased so it must be something to do with that.

Anyone got the best settigns to use in yoats in the "Titles and metas" section I could go off?

I don't think there algo changes were applied recently. Have experienced minor changes during the last week of May, but 'twas no big deal. However, I'm no longer surprised when BHW members talk about things like this. Y'all should get used to these by now :D

Yeah i know they are happening all the time. I'm just seeing if there was a significant one at the same time as my drop. Or if I've just been fucking stupid and ruined my traffic messing with settings in yoast

No change, strange for your end..

Happen to check if your plugin is outdated or you just did some buggy jumps.....

Audit Please,
C.

I was hit by the Yoast update, set my settings to the following and everything bounced back to as was or better.

Content Types
  • Post - yes
    • date - yes
  • Pages - yes
    • date - yes
  • Projects - no
  • Gallery - no
Media
  • Redirect - yes
Taxonomies
  • Categories - no/hide
  • Tags - no/hide
  • Format - no/hide
  • Category URLs - remove
Archives
  • Disabled
I also have a few sites which use categories, so kept these on with category URL's as that is how the site works. All instances bounced back to same or better after changes + force Google crawl via GWC.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for this!

Im going to put settings to this and re crawl! Thanks for your help!

looking in search console around the drop in rankings the crawl errors increased. Mainly on pages with /feed/ at the end e.g.

as you can see its coming under not followed, so i have obvisouly "no indexed" something in yoast and its killing off the site

Same exact thing happened to me. Drop during May and a spike at the beggining of June, now its back to normal

traffic and rankings still decreasing. I don't think this is a manual penalty as I do not have any messages in search console. One thing I noticed around the time of the drop was in my "post tag sitemap" a decrease in indexed pages. You can see on the 28th the drop in indexed pages. A day or two later all my rankings started tanking. Now, everyone says that you should "no index" tag pages as they can cause duplicate content issues. But since they have been no indexed from my website, rankings have done nothing but decline. I have set the tag pages to be re-indexed and resubmitted to Google. But no improvement as of yet :(
