difference between url rank and domain rank?

When you check a domain in ahrefs, it gives you url rank and domain rank.
I understand the definitions of these (I think), url is the actual url, domain is the root domain

But when you check a root domain (example: http://www.abcdef.com) shouldn't the url rank equal the domain rank? because the URL and the domain are the same?
I have checked several sites and these 2 numbers are never the same. Why?

I suspect that the reason the URL rank of the root domain does not equal domain rank is because the domain rank is an accumulative value comprised of all pages (URL's) that are part of that domain, the root being one of those URL's.
Therefore the domain rank is likely a score that reflects 'everything', and the URL rank is, as you suggested, that one specific URL in isolation, whether it be the root URL or root.com/other.htm etc.

Though - that's just a guess, I could be entirely wrong

Domain Rank is Ahrefs way of calculating Domain Authority(DA) just like Moz. If you batch analyse lots of domains you will always find the domain with higher domain rank on Ahrefs will have a higher DA on Moz. But that doesn't mean the domain is higher quality domain as even a spammed domain can have both higher DA and DR(Domain Rank)..

About the URL rank its nothing but "Ahrefs rank" in other terms. I don't bother much about it but you can read this where they say its an attempt by Ahrefs to showcase domains ranking similar to Pagerank(PR). However I have found spammed domains with higher Ahrefs rank and Domain Rank so its not a clear indicator about domains quality. Best is to compare Moz, Ahrefs, Majestic and PR metrics to know about domains quality..

Someone tried to explain this to me really simply once, not sure how true it is, but seems to make sense. Ahrefs' URL rank is based on the links going to the home page. Domain Rank is based on the links pointing to the whole site. So Domain rank will always be higher or equal to URL rank.

Its apples and oranges. The specific URL can have say 30 UR while the domain itself to have 5 DR. So you need to sort first by DR according to your criteria (for example over 10 DR) and then to sort the pages of this website by UR to find which page is strongest (according to ahrefs) - usually is the homepage.
