I've been thinking about giving this a try. I just want to know if it's even worth the effort. I know a lot of people use comment backlinks on web 2.0 sites. What will happen if I skip that and directly link my money site? Would it rank or would Google immediately see it as spam and penalize it? I'd use quality hand written content on the money site.

If those are junk links may be you will be able to get few position up but doesnt really going to work. You better go with quality ones.

After Google updates last year, links are scrutinized more. So, instead of comment links, quality links will be better to rank. Comments can be used to increase the presence of your site.

You said adding massive amounts of links, and normally this has to be done with bots, manually would be too slow. Google will see a huge spike in your link velocity, and this could happen naturally, like in the case of a viral news. Or it could be judged unnatural (more likely).

In general you do not want to get nailed, so do not stick out.

There were some sites that were making thrasy free backlinks from sitetrackings sites.

Yes, Google will see this as spam and likely penalize you. Consider gunning for difficult to get, high quality backlinks via guest post submissions etc., web 2.0s and comment spam have very little value now.

Adding a massive amount of links to a site works, but you make sure that you know your limits and that you make sure you use high quality ones. Google can penalize you for spamming. So, you might as well go for high quality links.

Massive amount of links through automation tools or the hard way ?
