When choosing a new niche to pursue do you:

a) pick a niche based on something you are interested/passionate about?
b) pick a niche based on trends or data
c) pick a niche based on both these factors (although you may give preference to one over the other, if so explain.)

C.) Would be my first answer because if I'm both passionate about a topic and the trends data are showing that I can be an opportunist about it. I would be more than willing to do so. I would clearly understand the community at whole while simply just doing data test runs with marketing and other factors.

Then we have A.)..... If it were only A.) I feel that I could possibly build a following based on the same passion that I follow. Which I would be in control of moreover. If that doesn't work, I would debate about either abandoning ship or finding another twist to my passionate niche method(combine, merge with another, etc). I will already have experience with empathy understanding what the end user is expecting, as someone who understands the niche a lot clearer.

If you go with clearly B.) based on trends and statistics. You might look like a fool if you really fail at studying your target market. I feel there is a lot more homework involved since you have to actually study the behavioral patterns with your market as well. Which is a huge disadvantage as if the answer was clearly A. You will come in there live, looking like a crazy newbie if you aren't careful. So it would take you a lot longer to build a reputation, where anyone would even consider looking into whatever promotion you are pushing. Unless you had some other ulterior motive with looking weak and helpless in a niche.

Good answer. I think another disadvantage to going solely b) is that it's easier to become discouraged if one doesn't find positive results fast.

I think I'll most likely go for B) as profits is what it matters the most, and once that is established, you can just simply research for more data on the subject and add articles accordingly.
I doubt not many of my interests can be turned into profit, and if there's no profit coming in, the online venturing days would be numbered, and you can expect a shutdown anytime soon.
If revenue is still coming in, that's the lifeline of the online venture.

One could argue that any interest could be turned into profit, but I mainly use B) myself due to the simple fact that I get my doze of doing what I'm interested in when doing the research, checking keywords and competition, building the site and then trying to make money.

So yeah, I base my niche selection on data, or sometimes a hunch, and I get to do what I'm interested in when setting everything up.

A if you’re starting out. Helps you have confidence and knowledge in what you are writing about. Means that you can learn the fluent writing skills whilst you learn.
Then move to C and mix it up into other sub-niches - expand the knowledge and your writing skills a little more.

Once you feel like you can write at a competent level, create decent stuff to cater for niches and closely related niche’s you can expand that knowledge even more.

That’s my plan anyway haha

Both and none. From all the profitable niches that meet your aspirations, pick the one that is closer to what you like. You have to decide though, what your goals are. If money is your priority #1 then you may have to discard the less profitable but 'enjoyable' niches. If your'e not THAT hungry for the money then go for the enjoyable.

Not if you have very clear what your goals are.

The thing is I am not interested in anything, what can I do?

b)

Of course awesome if you can do c) but I highly doubt you are interested in every profitable niche. Why are you in IM? To make money or to follow a hobby?

I'm in IM for money on some level, but I feel I may perform better in niche/communities where I can better associate and adapt to people rather than trying to push my way into niche/communities where I have little knowledge or interest.

I don't completely reject the idea of option b) but I feel that if the niche has poor sustainability, it could be something not worth pursuing. For example: Right now "Liverpool" is trending on google trends. Now, I could go make up a page targeting this niche, but I haven't even played soccer/football since elementary. I feel I would lose authenticity and perhaps not deliver the same level of quality as someone who is passionate about soccer/football.

Sorry, if that's a poor example for my point. I tried. :P
