How to get backlinks from authority sites bbc, nytimes, mashable etc for free?

Getting links from such sites is really difficult unless you have a compelling content.
If you believe you have a news worthy content - try to contact them directly for publishing.

1. Use a tool to check for expired domains that are already linked to from those sites, then purchase and rebuild those domains.

2. Submit articles to those sites through the correct channels and hope they get published - quality and relevance would have to be exceptional though.

3. Find a contributor and do some sort of deal with them in exchange for them linking to your site.

if a story is newsworthy can they approach you to ask to use it or images, you can ask for a credit and a link back to your site / blog.

A friend of mine posted in FB this past week where he lived about a water burst and he added images.
He was asked on FB by a local news channel reporter if they could use his images to syndicate to their various outlets.

He replied " yeah help yourself " :weep::oops::eek:

As you may have guessed he is not into IM at all. But I added the news reporter as a friend on FB :smirk:

you can try press release services like prnewswire they will get you post in big outlets

Unless you pay them to run an article on you - you won't be getting any free links from those sites.
Or otherwise, like someone above has already suggested - find an expired domain that has those links, and then you can either setup a blog on that expired domain and link back to your site, or 301 to your site as a whole, and that should allow some of the link juice flowing to you after that.
These expired domains don't come cheap though - and that only mean one thing - it's something that work.
