[Journey] My Second Affiliate Website

After I built an affiliate website that runs more or less on autopilot, it's time to do it a second time!

This is how I want to approach it this time:

• invest about $500 to create a basic website with a few articles and a couple backlinks (I'll outsource the writing & backlinking part)
• let the website age until I reach the income threshold of approximately 1$ per day
• once I reach that, I'll continue to invest further until I reach my next threshold

Explanation: 1$ a day equals 30$ per month. If I'd like to sell a website that earns 30$ per month and has a modern look and feel, I estimate that I'll get around 500$ for it (based on the recently sold websites on Flippa).

In order to pull this off, it's important to focus on the right keywords. I already did the research for the first 5 articles where I specifically want to target the low hanging fruits. I think I should be able to get at least some traffic with these picks (KWFinder):

Next, I’ll order the articles and start setting up the website. I'll share the progress.

It sounds solid on paper at least, we'll see how it goes. Usually the strategy adapts over time. I have one go-to writer I usually work with but as he's quite busy right now, I might outsource the writing to someone from BHW. I already requested a lot of different samples from the marketplace. As I just bought my domain and I'm currently setting up the Wordpress site, I think it's time to talk a bit about structure.

As this is a very small site to start with, I prefer to keep it simple:

• Homepage shows a mood image or a slogan (maybe both) and teases the three most popular posts as well as the three most recent posts
• Main navigation consists of two categories (think "acoustic guitar" and "electric guitar") wich lead to the respective category page with the articles (ex. "best acoustic guitar for traveling")
• I show only related posts that are in the same category on the single post page
• About us, terms of use, privacy policy, earnings disclaimer and contact page are in the footer menu

I use Generate Press theme, Thrive Content Builder and a custom made logo.

The setup might take a couple days.

I have an affiliate site that was making $80-$150 per month but the income has dropped along with rankings since January. I'm wondering if I should sell the site or work on it more to get back on track.

I don't have a specific financial goal in mind. Right now, I just want to reach the first milestone, after that I'll up the bar.

First, find out why your rank has dropped and what's needed to get back to where you were. Try to estimate how much time and money you need to get it back up. Then evaluate your current website value with the free tools over at Flippa and Empire Flippers. If you're willing to put in the hours and the financial investment is in relation to your asset value, I'd keep it. Otherwise I'd prepare the project for selling.

Honestly, I have no idea. It's depending on so many factors, take content writing for example. I still wait for my first article to be delivered. Yes, all keywords are currently "best xxx".

I really want to bring the site back up again, but my other business is taking up all my time.

If yes then disavow bad links which harms you site.

I don't remember clearly. Probably added a few web 2.0s and left them to index naturally. Like I said, a lot of people got hit back then, so I don't think it's due to bad seo practices.

Still, I'll take another look at webmasters and prepare a list of links that can go.

If time is the only issue, hire a VA.

On a more serious note: Why don't you do a test? Take one of your articles (I guess we're talking about ranking articles for specific keywords here) and build (or buy) a couple web 2.0 links to it. Check the SERP movement the next weeks to determine whether it's worth the effort. And of course, disavowing bad links is always a good idea.

I built and ordered a ton of web 2.0 and never had any issues with google updates. Check you on site SEO: Do you have weak content? What about content length? How's your internal link structure? Check your outgoing links. And so on.

As far as I'm concerned, yes. I'm making a couple 100$ per month and it's still growing.
