Silo URL Structure / Understanding

Hi All

Long time reader short time 'member'

I'm struggling to figure out the correct way to structure a site for ecommerce using Silo with similar products. Say for example I'm selling plants and my one category is fruit plants Id normally make this url something like:

url.com/fruit-plants/

then the sub category

url.com/fruit-plants/strawberry-plants/

and then products

url.com/fruit-plants/strawberry-plants/type-one-strawberry-plant.html
url.com/fruit-plants/strawberry-plants/type-two-strawberry-plant.html

Using Silo how should I go about doing this? Should it be

url.com/fruit

categories

url.com/fruit/strawberry

url.com/fruit/strawberry/type-one.html

With then relevan keyword for each cateogry on the page so 'strawberry' contains "Strawberry Plants" or similar?

You are overthinking this. A silo structure is to improve the navigation for your website, put usability first.

If your site is about plants go for the first one.

But always try to focus on ux.

Just pick any eCommerce ranking site in tough niche, most of them have silo structure. You just need to find good one. If it didn't help youtube is your friend .

I thought part of it was to improve the structure of the site as well in terms of how pages are listed inside? Maybe missed the mark totally

Thanks yeah ux is not an issue it was just planning the structure of the site in terms of how categories and pages should be structured if the default original way is the best way or if it was the second as I assumed that's what silo was :/

Structure and listing are both part of navigation.

^ This is how you would silo it. Like @Nut-Nights said, just go to any popular e-commerce site, as they have perfect silos set up. Keep in mind that you might not have as many categories though, or as large of a site, and you always want to have a good number of pages within each silo. So if you only have 10 pages related to fruit plants in general, it might make sense to lump them all under one category, instead of having 1-3 spread over 3-4 subcategories in the silo.

Make sure your interlinking is silo'd as well, so a strawberry plant should not link to a pomegranate plant, but different strawberry plants should link to each other. The goal is to maximize the flow of link juice in each category of the silo, then make sure it gets cleaned up as it moves upwards in your structure so it can be redistributed to the rest of your website with as much relevance as possible.

Thanks that's what I thought.

Yes figured to inter link with companion planting (example), pests, other plant varieties etc so I have one big internal link set up as you mentioned.
