Cloudflare offers free ssl and we could also buy our own from Comodo etc.

From what i have read so far ...

cloudflare's free ssl offers encryption but not identity verification. whereas the paid certs provide domain identity verifications too.

will a free ssl certification suffice ? i see plenty of websites using it an ranking in high enough positions.

Cloudfare is perfect for what most site owners need, quick to set up. Comodo gets theirs from symantec, which isn't recognised by Google.

i am curious, if a paid ssl certificate offers greater seo benefits, like more trust in the eyes of google, because it verifies ownership.

And visitors. If you have WordPress with comments enabled, newsletter, email capture, selling anything, then ssl is needed
It's all about trust

I have used free ones as well as paid ones, no difference in "SEO" whatsoever.

thanks for the input. i think i shall go with cloudflare free ssl for the moment. seems quick and easy.

Go for Let's Encrypt - Free SSL
