How do you choose VPS?

So I was filling out this survey for a friend, and it asked about the reasons you consider when choosing to use vps, and it got me thinking.

For me it's probably, whether the provider has servers in certain countries that I can choose to host my stuff on > payment method (if there are ways to pay other than credit card or paypal) > price

What do you think?

p.s. if anyone's feeling generous or wanting to troll someone, my friend really needs ppl to help fill out his survey, it's for his thesis research i think. it's anonymous (meaning they're not collecting anything like IP, cz he'll get in trouble if it does lol) and you can always decline/skip questions you don't want to answer

The things I look for in a host for my VPS, are pretty straightforward. 1) The connection latency and overall reliability for the host's responses in the cloud 2) Support availability and response time (unmanaged is my preference, but for the issues on their side or in cases they are required etc.) 3) Price (of course) 4) Options for SSD, and cPanel, as well as adding additional dedicated IPs ... 5) How the billing and scaling works

If I can't clone my VPS in a time of need, or at least add more resources to a single VPS....and do that in close to real-time (like adding 2 more processors - or RAM), then they are simply useless to me and most others I would assume.

There are a few which come with limited trial options. Suggest try and see which one suits your need. Unless you try wouldn't be able to get hang of service quality

And I completely agree with taking into consideration the connection latency and reliability. As for support, I dunno, sometimes I feel like, in order to obtain their support service, you'll have to give them a bunch of contact information or whatever. It's nice sometimes, like I once got reimbursed cz they screwed up on their side. But when I get paranoid, I'd just rather ditch the current VPS and move on to another one instead of wanting them to contact me and whatnot. Just my personal opinion.

You are welcome. I have had my issues with support, and what I have found is you are getting a more inexpensive VPS solution because either the infrastructure isn't appropriated, designed, or managed effectively - which turns into the support and sales side just undercutting competition to survive and support trying to put out fires and not have top tier level support to escalate to....because good admins/engineers wouldn't stay on a sinking ship. Or, more likely, you have an excellent infrastructure, and a great product/value but the UX was designed 10 years ago and most of time you have to figure out what the issue is yourself because their tier 1 isn't even in that data center and are probably tier 1 at best. And that's why you don't register your domain with whomever you are going to spin up a VPS, so you can mitigate that risk while saving money. Personally, I think managed servers / paid support is a waste of money, even if you are big enough to warrant the cost, because if you are at the point in which you can throw money at the problem, hire someone to manage it for you... I have gone the SSH CLI route, and with free/open source GUI management interfaces, but I always seem to gravitate towards paying for cPanel because it works...and makes it easier to migrate to a new host/service - and quickly. - but I'm just a hack, so who knows

I would generally look at the performance of the vps, and how much control I can get. Like how much configuration can I control, can I pick and choose the kind of ram, ssd, network...etc. The more I can control the better. And of course, it has to be reasonable price, not like I have that much to splurge on.

I live in New Zealand and finding an affordable NZ based VPS is a nightmare. I guess that comes from living at the arse end of the world, but if anyone knows of anything out there at a reasonable price, please PM me.

Because I am looking to use it as a squid proxy for JARVEE (FB, LinkedIn, Insta accounts).....

Plus a few other geo specific reasons.
