Pushing negative results down the search list

There’s an unflattering news article concerning a friend that appears in the top place when you search for his name in Google (along with another 3 high ranking pages which basically repeat the same information). The top ranking one is a national paper. He was quoted £3500 per link from a reputation agency to push the article to page 3 in Google, and was assured that it would take three months and the results would be permanent. As there are 4 links that sort of money is out of the question. He said no new content would be created, as that would be more costly. I was a little sceptical on how permanent any results would be, and if after the 3 months if they would just go back to the top.


But I’m curious on what techniques are commonly used to push these negative results down (without creating new content). And if such techniques can realistically work longer term. Have people had success in this area? I’m considering learning some new skills and giving it a go myself.

I would be very skeptical. That price isn't bad but their promises make me very worried. Three months isn't very long and to guarantee it won't come back?

If he's in a national newspaper, it's going to be expensive and that is likely a strong site that will rank well. The stronger the site, typically the more difficult it will be to suppress.

@BHopkins is very much correct. In ORM, any promise of permanent results, especially in a timeframe as small as three months, and especially promising the links being pushed down to page three or lower, are lying to you.

Thanks both, yes I am sceptical. I was also curious of the techniques they would use, they said they wouldn't be creating new content. So how would people usually achieve this?

Create great content, publish on great sites and build links to push up that content. That's the general idea but obviously there is a lot more to it.

I'd be extremely skeptical.

Usually, it's a monthly retainer. Not a flat fee. But you are looking at some serious time to push down that negative content.
