having a laptop on for a week

I'm soon going on vacation I wanna have my laptop on the whole time I'm gone so I can have a macro running on it and when I come home I'll have a huge pile of automated cash
So my question is; will it be safe? can a laptop handle being on for so long? will it catch fire or what? it gets rather hot when it's on for a whole day.

and is there some way to make my laptop drain less electricity? mabye turn off the display some how?

I'm not sure about the power usage issue but, I have a laptop that is 4 years old and gets hot as shit - my solution...

go to wal-mart or best buy and get a laptop cooler - it is a plastic case that has two fans in it that draws hot air from your battey down and out the back - and it gets it's power from plugging it into the usb on the computer... they are only like $20 ... best computer investment I have made in a while, I highly recommend it.

Put it on a hard surface and my laptop doesn't get hot, yours might be different though. A laptop running is only the equivalent of a large lightbulb, and with your huge automated pile of cash you can pay for that easily anyways.

Another suggestion might be to clean it if you feel comfortable taking it apart. Depending on how long you have had the laptop and in what environment there often times is a buildup of dust and debris in the heatsink and fan area. That can really help to reduce the heat in some laptops. Other laptops have poor air flow and bad design and a laptop cooler really is an idea to consider.

Open her up and clean her vents, remove the grill, this allows better airflow, this is what i did with mine and it helped lots. Or get an air duster spray and spray it into the fan holes to get rid of dust, then leave the laptop on its side, to get good airflow.

Thats what id do anyway, ive left mine on for a few days before without any issue.

If there's an option in the BIOS for "shutdown on over temperature" or something set that!

I leave my laptop on like 27 days out of the month. I just have it on a ventilated stand (steel, no fans, but there are holes on the part where the laptop sits) and it does fine. I will probably take it apart and blast it with compressed air, and pick up one of those vent stands.

Just don't leave it on a bed or carpet or anything else that smothers it and restricts air flow.

Extremely important if you want it on for a week: Turn off windows auto-updates. If you get an update two days in, your laptop will restart and just sit at the login screen til you get back. Happens to me all the time. You also need to adjust the power settings so it doesn't ever sleep or that will cancel your work as well.

Put the MONITOR on the surface, but keep the bottom of the laptop not touching the surface, this will allow it to breathe.
Also, to prevent my laptop from warming up, I tend to put it on power saver, it doesn't get as warm as high performance.

My laptop is off for about an hour a day, my old laptop however, I would not have felt safe leaving that on for a week, that used to overheat bad and the charger / adaptor used to get super-hot, that's the main reason I bought my new laptop.

Keep it cool and it should be fine. Get a cooling shit like above posts said, and like a little fan or something to blow out the heat even more
