Does anybody has any experience ranking for hostels/hotels?

Is this different than ranking other niches? What would be the main difference.

Yes it is. The main difference is that travel is one of the most competitive niches, along with poker and casino. Ranking is still possible as some hostels and hotels are less known than other, which means less competition.

Competition will be tough. You should read about local SEO to boost a hotel, getting citations and reviews, building up your google business page etc. You need to have a decent budget for this.

Hmmmm ok.

The thing is right now I'm in a hostel, and I can stay/eat for free, if I help them a bit.
I have experience in Seo, but never with hostels/hotels.

What could I do so that they see some results? Or should I focus on any other form of marketing?
Also, can the search engines of booking.com, tripadvisor, hostelworld easily be optimized for my hostel?

Boosting review is key, there are a LOT of platforms. Getting local citations is also key. After that there is of course linkbuilding, but that is more expensive and takes more time. If you boost their reviews and get them more citations that is something you can SHOW them as proof you're working and it can have a quick impact.

Focus on getting good local reviews. Know about your competition and produce good quality content and share it those large social media sites. Attract your customers with your articles reviews.

Well when ranking a site I mainly consider about hotel + city kind of keywords. Mostly the local citations and listings does the trick for apart from the few PBN posts that'd be used to boost.

And most of the time the businesses already have their G business page if not I'd set up and boost it with some reviews too.
