Google Speed Update - Make sure you site(s) is/are optimized.

Just been reading about this on FB, thanks for posting this mate.

They're not going to give you a boost if your page loads faster. What they said is they're going to move down your site is your load speed is incredibly slow. No actual SEO benefits of having a site load faster.

never said you did. I posted this so people who will not bother to read the articles won't think that is it going to be a (positive) ranking factor.

If your site loads too slow, it doesn't matter how highly ranked it is in Google - your conversion rate is going to suck.

That being said, if you aren't already focused on making your site faster, you're missing out. Glad Google is going to punish slower sites more actively, nothing more frustrating than waiting 8 seconds for a site to load only to find out it's garbage.

Surely if your site is moved down for being slow then by definition it will move up for being fast?

That depends on if you have a slow site to start with, if you have a molasses slow site and you stick it on a fast server then you may move up but if your site is already halfway decent the chances are there will be no movement. But basically it is all semantics, they are more or less the same thing.

I always assumed that site load time was relevant to ranking reasonably well and from what I am reading this is more related to mobile search, am I wrong and this is all new?

That is All About Rankbrain Google Wants People Optimize Their As Per Rankbrain. If Your Site Load Slowly Than it Is Obvious that Your Site Have High Bounce Rate Which Google Don't Want
